Interesting Facts About Fire Extinguishers

The concept of a fire extinguisher has been around for a long time

Ctesibius of Alexandria invented a hand pump which was used, among other things, to pump water to extinguish fires. Years later, when Ambrose Godfrey, a German chemist invented a fire extinguisher that used gunpowder and a fuse to expel water from the "fire extinguisher". The modern fire extinguisher was invented in 1818 by a British Captain named George William Manby. This fire extinguisher is made of copper, contains 3 gallons of potassium carbonate (dry chemical) extinguishing agent, and contains compressed air.

Fire extinguishers save lives

Every year, it is estimated that thousands of lives are saved due to the quick and effective use of fire extinguishers. Whether it's a kitchen fire at home, a car engine fire, a warehouse fire, or a fire caused by the ravages of nature, fire extinguishers save lives.

Fire extinguishers need to be checked regularly

Fire extinguishers need to be inspected regularly to meet current safety standards and ensure that they are functioning properly.

Water will not extinguish all fires

Water is excellent for extinguishing Class A fires (wood, paper, common combustibles) but should not be used on Class B, C or D fires.
