Fires Ship are Common! Here are the causes and how to deal with it

For Minvo friends who work as sailors, you must know what risks can occur on the ship, right? There is certainly a potential for ship fires.

Thus, we need to know what crew members or even ordinary people need to do when there is a fire on the ship.

Then, what are the common causes of Vessel fires?

A ship is one of the places that have the potential for fire accidents. According to maritime news, a fire on a ship usually occurs when a high-pressure fuel pipe leaks into the lower tank of the ship's engine, which is usually called the fuel tank.

This is an important thing for you to always check how the alarm system is working properly. Or there could be frequent training or simulations for the crew to stay trained in handling fire accidents.

These fires are usually most likely to occur in the engine room. Pipe clamps can rub against the pipe itself which can cause the pipe to wear out and lead to holes. Leaks in the boiler are what cause fires that occur in the engine room.

An important step that all crew members must take is to stay calm! By being calm, we can think straight and determine what the next step is.

  1. Of course, for your own safety, make sure you get a life jacket in case you need to flee the ship. To evacuate in an emergency, passengers can follow the evacuation directions as soon as possible.

  2. Find out what type of fire it is. There are different types of fires and different ways of handling them. Fires that occur on ships are usually class B, C, and D fires.

  3. Use fire extinguishers to put out the fire. The use of fire extinguishers is also very important and must be available at all times on board. Make sure the extinguisher tube is maintained and the quality is still good in terms of the appearance of the tube (rusty or not), the expiration date and the quality of the media in the extinguisher.

How to prevent fires on ships

Several steps can be taken to prevent or prepare before a fire occurs on a ship, one of which is to install a detector.

There are several types of detectors that need to be used on board:

  1. Fire Detector: This tool is to detect sparks in a room. The alarm will sound when there is a small spark at 25 Hz.

  2. Heat Detector: These detectors have one thick strip and a thin strip. The thin strip is more "sensitive" to measuring temperature rise than the thick strip
